Interesting Reading Sites

Did I mention that these are free?!!! How fantastic! I could play at this all day long! I'm excited by the possibilities here.

Read Me: This site is designed to get students motivated and interested in reading. It has engaging tasks that require students to think about the strategies that they are using (or not) as they read. Each task requires specific strategies. I really like this site as it helps students to consider and articulate the strategies that they are using as opposed to, "I dunno."

Click on the appropriate links to get to PDF files that give detailed teacher notes, student reading strategies charts, etc. While the site is mainly directed towards 11-14 year-old boys, it would be of interest to girls as it topical, current, and mature. The themes are: this is me (blog), media (film), sports, graphics, and love.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any “read-to-me” elements, but I really like the site as it is directed towards youth using a mature format.

Attached to the above site is: Comic Master

This interactive site allows students to create their own graphic novel. The only problem that I foresee is that students may spend an inordinate amount of time on the various options. However, I think that students would find this incredibly interesting and help motivate them to create written pieces as the graphics are very detailed and mature.

Other sites that I want to look at when I have some more time (when the kids are in bed!).
